How to plan

Build your route around the closure days

Venice's civic museums each have one weekly closure day — and the closures are not aligned. Plan your itinerary in the wrong order and you'll vaporetto out to Burano on a Monday only to find the Lace Museum closed.

The three suggested routes below are deliberately designed around these closures. Pick the one that matches the length of your stay. Times are guidelines, not absolutes — Venice rewards slowness.

Mon Save for St. Mark's Square + Murano (both open) — skip Burano, Ca' Pesaro, Mocenigo, Natural History, Torcello, MUVEC.

Tue Skip Ca' Rezzonico and Fortuny.

Wed Skip Casa Goldoni — but every other museum is open.

Day 1 — Standard or Plus

St. Mark's Square day — Doge's Palace + the three connected museums

A single ticket covers all four museums around Piazza San Marco — they're physically connected. This is the same day whether you're on Standard or Plus.

Doge's Palace (Palazzo Ducale) Be there at opening (9:00) — security queue is at its shortest. Allow 2 hours including Bridge of Sighs.

Coffee on Piazza San Marco Caffè Florian or Quadri if you want the postcard moment (expensive). The bar at the back of Caffè Florian is much cheaper than the table.

Museo Correr Just across the square. Bellini, Carpaccio, Canova. 60–90 minutes.

Lunch in Castello Walk 5 minutes east into Castello for cicchetti at All'Arco or Osteria al Portego. Lighter and cheaper than San Marco.

Archaeological Museum + Marciana Library Both accessed via the Correr — you'll re-enter on the same pass. Greek and Roman antiquities plus 16th-century library halls with Titian and Tintoretto ceilings. 60 minutes total.

Sunset on Riva degli Schiavoni Walk east from Piazza San Marco. Best light on the Bacino di San Marco.

Day 1 covers: Doge's Palace, Museo Correr, Archaeological Museum, Marciana Library — the full Standard pass in one day.

Day 2 — Plus only

Lagoon day — Murano + Burano

The islands are the reason to upgrade to Plus. Plan a Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday or Sunday — Monday closes Burano's Lace Museum, Tuesday is fine for Murano but the Lace Museum is open.

Coloured houses walk + return Vaporetto 12 — Walk Burano's coloured-house streets before the Vaporetto back. The 17:00–18:00 light is best for photos.

Day 2 covers: Glass Museum Murano, Lace Museum Burano — and the Vaporetto experience itself.

Day 3 — Plus only

Grand Canal day — Ca' Rezzonico + Ca' Pesaro + Fortuny

Three palace-museums lining the Grand Canal. Plan for Wed–Sun (Tuesday closes Ca' Rezzonico and Fortuny; Monday closes Ca' Pesaro).

Vaporetto to Ca' Rezzonico stop Vaporetto 1 — Line 1 goes the full length of the Grand Canal — the slowest, most scenic route. Get off at Ca' Rezzonico.

Ca' Rezzonico The most photogenic palace on the canal. 18th-century Venetian rooms — Tiepolo, Guardi, Longhi. 90 minutes.

Walk + Vaporetto to Ca' Pesaro Vaporetto 1 — Across the canal, near San Stae stop. Cross via San Tomà traghetto if you want the gondola-as-bus moment.

Ca' Pesaro — modern + oriental art Klimt's "Judith II" alone is worth the ticket. Oriental Art Museum is in the same building — same ticket. 90–120 minutes.

Vaporetto to San Beneto for Fortuny Vaporetto 1 — Get off at Sant'Angelo or Rialto, then walk to Campo San Beneto.

Museum Fortuny Atelier of Mariano Fortuny. Photography, stage design, textile art. 60 minutes — closing at 17:00–18:00 depending on season.

Day 3 covers: Ca' Rezzonico, Ca' Pesaro, Museum Fortuny — and a full ride down the Grand Canal.

Vaporetto lines you'll actually use

The pass doesn't cover the Vaporetto — but you'll want it for at least Murano/Burano (Day 2) and the Grand Canal palaces (Day 3). The 24h/48h/72h passes pay for themselves quickly.

Line 1 — the slow Grand Canal line. Best for first-time visitors. Stops at every palace.
Line 2 — the fast Grand Canal line. Skips some stops — use it when you're in a hurry.
Line 4.1 / 4.2 — circular line via Murano. Use this from Fondamente Nove.
Line 12 — Fondamente Nove → Murano → Burano → Torcello. The lagoon islands line.
Line 14 — San Zaccaria → Lido → Punta Sabbioni. Useful if your hotel is on the Lido.
