What the Venice Museum Pass does NOT include

St. Mark's Basilica, the Campanile and the Clock Tower are not civic museums — they need separate tickets. Here's exactly what falls outside, and where to book it.

What the Venice Museum Pass does NOT cover

The Venice Museum Pass covers the 14 civic museums of the Fondazione Musei Civici di Venezia — and only those. A surprising number of "must-see" Venice attractions sit just outside that scope, including the Basilica that gives Piazza San Marco its name.

This is the single most common cause of disappointed reviews. We'd rather you knew now than at the Basilica's entrance.

The three big "I thought this was included" attractions

Each of these is right next to Piazza San Marco — and each needs a separate ticket. We've linked to the right place to book.

St. Mark's Basilica (Basilica di San Marco)

The cathedral itself. Byzantine mosaics, the Pala d'Oro altarpiece, the Treasury, the upper loggia. Not part of the civic museums system.

  • Entry to the church itself is free, but a queue is unavoidable — skip-the-line tickets cost €3–8.
  • Pala d'Oro (the gold-and-jewel altarpiece) is a paid upgrade, ~€5.
  • Loggia dei Cavalli (the bronze horses + St. Mark's Square balcony) is a separate paid ticket, ~€8.

Campanile di San Marco (Bell Tower)

The 99 m bell tower in the middle of Piazza San Marco — best panoramic view of Venice. Operated separately from the Basilica and from the civic museums.

  • Lift to the top — no stairs. Around €12.
  • Closed in bad weather (wind, fog).
  • Go at sunset for the postcard — but expect queues year-round.

Tickets are sold at the entrance and via the official basilicasanmarco.it site — not currently available on GetYourGuide.

Torre dell'Orologio (Clock Tower)

The Renaissance astronomical clock tower on Piazza San Marco — the one with the two bronze "Moors" striking the hour. Entry only via guided tour, booked in advance.

  • Guided tour only — limited slots per day.
  • Around €14 per person.
  • Booked through the official vivaticket channel only.

Bookings are handled exclusively by the official vivaticket channel — not currently available on GetYourGuide.

Vaporetto, water taxis, transport

The pass does not cover any boat transport. Murano, Burano, Torcello and Lido all require a Vaporetto pass. From the airport you need either Alilaguna (water bus) or a water taxi.

A 24h, 48h or 72h Vaporetto pass pays for itself if you're visiting the islands. Our sister site compares prices and routes:
